My wedding gift mixer (a Sunbeam Mixmaster) turned 33 a week before Christmas, and my husband thought it was time for me to have a new one. He gifted me on Christmas with the KitchenAid 5 Qt. Artisan in white. I love this mixer and leave it out on my counter, something I never did with the Mixmaster. I recently purchased the citrus juicer attachment from Amazon and am very pleased with it as well. I have not read all 109 previous reviews on this site, but I have read a few that were disgruntled because their Artisans did not mix well. I initially had the same problem with the beater/bowl clearance. It is very simple to remedy. There is a beater adjustment screw on the mixer and the manual describes how to make the adjustments. I got even better instructions by calling customer support at KitchenAid. The technician told me to drop a dime into the empty bowl, turn the mixer on (about setting 2) using the flat beater, and it should move the dime 1/4" to 1/2" each time it rotates around the bowl. This is the right clearance for the beater to mix everything at the bottom of the bowl, but not low enough to cause wear on the beater from constant friction with the bottom of the bowl during usage. I tweaked the screw setting 1/4 turn each time until I got that dime moving. At this setting, I can now beat a single egg white to stiff peaks in the 5 qt. bowl. That's impressive.
This mixer is as sturdy as a tank, and you can hear the quality as it mixes. Although I had previously purchased a KitchenAid mixer for my daughter as a gift, I would never have splurged on one for myself. I am so happy my husband thought I was worth it!

This KitchenAid mixer is an excellent investment! I just love mine! The dough hook attachment is the greatest invention ever. No more kneading! I used this wonderful machine to make 4 pounds of Pizza Geina dough without breaking a sweat. Add your ingredients, turn it on and it does the rest! It has a very powerful motor and every part of this mixer is excellent quality and well made. It is simple to lock in the mixing bowl and it is also a breeze to clean. The different attachments are very easy to attach and remove. It would be impossible not to love it! Did I mention how easy the clean up is? I love it so much I bought the KitchenAid quilted cover for it. Once you use this mixer you will never want to use anything else! The Best!

Compaired to other sets, you get more in this set for the same price or less without giving up quality. Plus, you can't put stainless sets in the microwave to melt butter.
Pros:
1. Large set with odd sizes (like 3/4 cup)
2. I won't likely use the really small (like 1/32 tsp) but they can be used as a flour leveler to scrape over the top with the larger cups.
3. Sizes are not printed/painted on so they won't wear off
4. Weighted properly so that when I set it down they lay flat. My old set tipped over.
5. Nice mix of colors which makes them pretty but also makes it easier to tell close sizes apart.
6. The measures are in labled in cups and mL. No conversions.
The only thing I don't care for is that they don't stack together perfectly. The set is in 3 parts - 1 set of large cups, 1 set of medium cups and then a set of spoons. Each individual set stacks well, but when putting the 3 sets together they don't nest perfectly. Minor detail, so it's not worth subtracting a star over IMHO.

My last set of measuring cups had sadly dwindled down to 3 different sizes. It was getting difficult to measure 1/3 of a cup out of a 1/4 cup measuring cup. I found this set in my search, and it seemed interesting that it seemed to have a variety of sizes. Ah-ha! For someone whose sets seem to disapear with the socks and tupperware lids, it seemed great. (My personal theory is that aliens need these items to power their space ships :). These cups are sturdy, 'nest' well, and stay that way. No spilling all over the cupboard because they were touched. And the number of sizes makes recipies easy! Having just 2 people to feed in our home means reducing recipies, and this set has sizes that will actually allow us to measure odd amounts.

For the reviewer who asked if the faucet makes noise, it doesn't. The noise makers are the stovetop, the oven, dishwasher, microwave, and phone. I first saw this kitchen at Sam's Club last year before my daughter was born. I fell in love with it but like always before I purchase something I do my homework. In my opinion this is by far the BEST kitchen out there. I would have gotten the Dream or Custom but we're planning on having at least 3 kids, another girl on the way, so I knew this was the one to get. I also did my homework on where to buy. I didn't want to pay shipping, but my local Toys 'R Us was having problems getting the 50 that they ordered. So again I did my homework and found that toysandhome.com offers FREE shipping on this item, saves $$ but the price is higher at $212 I believe. While it was being shipped I read the reviews on assembly and prepared for the worst. When I opened the box I laughed at the other whining reviewers, hardly any assembly. It was so easy and fast, I assembled this 5 months pregnant. It took me 45 mins altogether from the time it took me to unbox it and stock it with food. If you have assembled your babies crib or changing table or anything from Ikea for that matter, this is a cake walk. I would recommend using a cordless drill. Yes, there are predrilled holes on the top pieces but the bottom pieces that get attached don't have holes, this is because of the plastic material used if both were predrilled it wouldn't stay secure. It's very sturdy. I don't have any problems with the dish rack or doors/drawers not opening, I think they solved that. I also got the 101 playfood set by Step2, which I recommend, it has tons more veggies/fruits in it than junk food like the other sets. I covered the boxed food and also the food with labels with clear contact paper to protect them from saliva and make them a little more ridged. I'm thinking of getting the 11 piece stainless steel pot set but not a big deal. My daughter is 12 months old and won't understand much. I'm giving this to her for Christmas and I can't wait to see her reaction! I think that this is appropriate for that age, no small items, but I think an older child can pretend and be more creative with this. Great item to grow with your child and a great babysitter for stay-at-home moms! I also got the matching storage chest, which is really big! I just wish that Step2 would make a matching pantry for the kitchens for tons of storage. There is a lot more storage in this kitchen than the others.

When I seen this kitchen I knew I had to have it for my 4 year old son! It was the only kitchen I found that had real character and not throwing up with pink flowers. Even though the intent was to give this to my 4 year old, my 6 year old son loved it just as much. They never even thougth it to be a toy for girls because of the color scheme and they were so excited to see the farm scene outside the window. The decals and graphics are fabulous. I was missing a bag of pots and pans along with a few decals. When I e-mailed the company, they promptly sent out a whole set of replacement dishes and stickers. So not only did I get the items I was missing, I got a few extra stickers to put away for when the kitchen becomes worn I can give it a quick lift to pass on to their 2 year old sister! The only thing I would like to see improved is the dishrach/light holder for above the sink. There should be some way to screw the hardware down so it isn't coming out. This has been a bit frustrating and we have resolved to just not having it out at all. Too bad, it's one of the favorite features. Otherwise, this is truly a kitchen that will remain timeless, something my childrens children will probably play with and not another item for the garage sale. Well worth the $$!

Suddenly, I feel like cooking again. Chopping onions, dicing carrots, making perfect juliennes with red peppers and mincing the garlic fine for my famous (!) vegetable medley is...effortless. All because of these knives. Ooh they are sharp! So be careful or you may end cutting yourself!
I love the fact that the knives are sharp right out the box. Many people swear by their forged knife blades but that makes the knives heavier. I have another set from Pinzon (Amazon's brand) and yet another from Cuisinart that I barely use as they are heavier and not as sharp as these knives. I think stamped blades are great as they are lighter and thinner like these Ginsu knives. If you cut vegetables more than meat then you need knives like these. For meat you need heavier blades with more balance and "brute force". For slicing a tomato so fine that you can see through it you need a Ginsu. With a Ginsu in your hand you'll end up sculpting roses from your radishes!
Update 11/5/08: I have been using these knives for 1.5 years now. They're still doing fine and are still very sharp. I regularly throw them in the dishwasher and they have not shown any signs of rusting. I love these knives and miss them if I am cooking somewhere else. I use the steak knives as everyday knives for slicing veggies and they work very well. If I ever purchase another set I will go with Ginsu again.

I bought these knives as a house warming gift for a friend. He raved so much about them I bought a set for my home. I have several set's of knives( even the one "Chef Tony" hawks on TV) and I use these the most. I am a nut about having sharp knives and have several sharping tools but my wife hates to sharpen knives and does more harm than good when she tries to. I figured she could use these, she loves them! I must warn that these knives come super sharp right out of the box, my wife sliced off a fake nail the first time she used them. I now use these knives all the time when I cook. We love these knives so much I ordered a third set for my Mother-iinlaws house for when my wife goes over there to cook. Like all good knives they should be hand washed and dried and stored in the block with the edge up to protect them. If you want good sharp knives and are not trying to impress with the look, these are for you.

I have had this product for 8 yrs - before the internet! I make a meal for my husband ; family every nite ; could hardly live without this product. It really eliminates the need to wash ; dry measuring spoons and takes all the hassle out of making dishes with many ingredients - at least you don't have to get a utensil out for measuring spices. I have had this product in 3 homes (I'm a military spouse) and it has been able to mount under the cabinets in 2 houses thus saving me valuable counterspace ; cabinet space due to the small kitchens in military housing. I would highly reccommend this to those who like to cook in tight spaces. Every move, I just empty the spices ; run the canister thru the dishwasher, then set out to dry. Of course, the labels had started to come off after 7 years so I simply printed out some new "cutesy" labels for those spices I constantly measure. As I remember, the labels that came with the package included most every spice you could ever want. Money well spent -- 8 yrs ago my hubby bought this for me ; it has survived a lot of cooking and moves.

Whoever came up with this spice rack is an absolute saint. I bought the white one because it is considerably cheaper than the chrome or satin finish version. I remembered kicking myself when I bought it, thinking it was an unnecessary extravagance and the money could be spent better somewhere else. Despite that, this is one of the most functional and user-friendly devices I have in my kitchen. I'm so glad I gave it a shot.
Really, my main concerns when I bought it were: Will I use it; will it make my life easier; is it priced competitively with similar products. I had tried other rotating spice racks, and been very disappointed. The main advantages of this spice rack over other spice racks are:
Low center of gravity compared to other rotating spice racks. It balances better, and fits into tighter spaces.
No twisting to open or close lids. A simple snap top saves a ton of time, and keeps me from having too many messy spills.
Holds a very generous portion of each spice. I didn't have to hold too many half-filled trade packages in reserve after filling this rack. It freed up a lot of kitchen space.
Nice, modular design allows you to stack units, or even hang them from underneath a cabinet.
Seems to me that the containers themselves are reasonably air tight. In a pinch, I've even rinsed off a container with the spices still inside. Turned out just fine.

I would prefer to write this review after some time has passed, but I want to make sure I get my thoughts out here early on.
This is my third kitchen scale. I bake all my own bread at home and good baking requires weighing the ingredients rather than volume measuring.
This scale feels very light which made me nervous at first, but I've used it for three weeks now, through a lot of baking over the holidays, and my concerns seem out of line.
This scale fits all my needs. Here is what I look for:
1. CAPACITY - AT LEAST 10 LB (this has 11 lb, or 5 kg). This is required to be able to tare out a glass bowl which can weigh near 5 lbs empty. 11 lb is still borderline when I'm making bread in a 6 qt kitchenaid bowl, but I just weigh ingredients separately in another bowl if it becomes a problem.
2. PRECISION - DOWN TO 1 GRAM - Another scale I have was only good to 5 grams and, although this was probably good enough, it drove me nuts not to be able to go down to 1 gram
3. STABLE PLATFORM FOR VESSELS -- My previous scale had a platform that sat on top of a pillar and eventually came detached. After that it was a balancing act to weight anything
4. ORDINARY BATTERIES -- I liked my old scales fine, but it drove me crazy that I had to keep buying overpriced CR2032 batteries for the things. These batteries don't last long and cost too much to replace. I can't figure out why they use these "button batteries" rather than the more common higher capacity AAA, AA, C, D, etc cells. It's not like these scales are micro-sized. In any event A BIG BIG PLUS for this scale is that it uses standard batteries! Don't sell this point short.
5. PRICE -- $50, $30, $70 for a scale to do this is crazy. the circuitry in these things is cheap. It's not rocket science. All these scales that have "features" are a waste of money. This scale does what needs to be done for $20.
6. FEATURES -- Zero the scale, read negative numbers, switch between metric and English weights, tare a bowl....that's it...that's all you need. All the rest of it is a waste of money and a further chance for failure. this does what is needed and no more.
7. EASY TO READ -- big numbers. this scale is good....Not so good about this scale (and the ONLY problem I have so far) is that big bowls tend to cover the read out a little and make it hard to pick up the weight. So far it hasn't been a big deal, but it can be a slight annoyance.
BOTTOM LINE:
This scale gets 100% on items 1-6 and about 50% on item 7 for a 93% grade overall...enough for me to give it 5 out of 5 stars.
The only remaining unrated item is DURABILITY....I'll report back in a year. My old, $50 scale only lasted 3.5 years. I'm betting this one goes at least that long...plus I won't be forking over for new button batteries every month and a half.

Item Reviewed: EatSmart Precision Pro - Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scale w/ Extra Large LCD and 11 Lb. Capacity.
EatSmart Precision Pro Digital Kitchen Scale, White
I am no scale expert, but EatSmart has offered me a free book if I write a review of their scale, and this has prompted my review. I have only been using the scale for two weeks, but I haven't had any problems with it so far. My only nitpicks at this point are that the "white" color has a pinkish tone and that the buttons aren't perfectly even. Aside from these minor cosmetic issues, the scale is exactly what I expected: a functional, easy-to-use, accurate, inexpensive ($25), small, lightweight, plastic scale.
When making my scale purchase, I also considered buying the Escali Primo Digital Multifunctional Scale, Chrome. The only advantage that the Escali Scale has over the EatSmart Precision Pro Scale is that the Escali Scale has buttons that prevent food from getting into the cracks. In contrast, when using the EatSmart Scale, you have to be careful not to drop food in between the two buttons. For this reason, I put my scale in a plastic Ziploc bag (gallon size) to protect it from drippings and droppings - this keeps it clean, and it still works great! In all other respects (except for the few noted below), the two scales seem to be very similar according to the product descriptions.
In the end I decided to purchase the EatSmart Scale over the Escali Scale because I preferred the EatSmart unit options. The EatSmart Scale allows you to switch back and fourth between four different unit modes: 0000 grams, 000.00 ounces, 00.000 pounds, and 00.000 kilograms (resolution: .05 ounces/1 gram). This requires pushing the right button once for each mode (for example, start on grams, then push once to get to ounces, then again to get to pounds, then a third time for kilograms). The EatSmart scale will remember the last unit-mode you chose, so you don't have to readjust every time. If you always use pounds, just leave it on pounds. When you return the next day and turn on your scale, it will still be on pounds.
In contrast, The Escali Scale only offers three unit options: 0000 grams, 000.00 ounces, and [00 lbs + 00.0 ounces]. I prefer the EatSmart Scale because it provides pounds with decimals (00.000 lbs) - for me this is easier to deal with than [00 lbs + 00.0 ounces]. I frequently measure out meats, which are labeled in pounds with decimals (00.000 lbs) at most grocery stores. If I buy a pound of hamburger and want to divide it into three 1/3-pound portions (0.33 lbs), the EatSmart Scale makes it easy. I just measure out the 0.33 lb portions right there on the scale. With the Escali Scale, I would have to do some conversions to measure out my portions, because the Escali Scale will not measure out pounds in decimals. In some cases these conversions can be difficult without a calculator. The conversion required in this example would be:
(0.33 lbs/portion) (16 ounces/lb) = 5.333 ounces/portion --- Possible to do without a calculator, but not ideal.
Another EatSmart feature that I have found convenient is that you do not have to use the tare button. Simply place your empty bowl or plate on the scale BEFORE turning it on, then push the left button once to turn it on. It turns on very quickly and is zeroed-out upon starting up. Then you can add your ingredients to the plate without having to wait for the scale to tare! If you would rather use the tare button, that is easy as well. Simply push the left button to turn on the scale, then place your empty plate on the scale, push the left button a second time to "tare" the scale, wait for the scale to zero out, and then add your food items that you want to measure.
With its three-minute automatic shut-off feature, the scale gives you plenty of time to make your measurement before turning off. I haven't had it shut off on me yet in the middle of a measurement. It also allows you to shut it off manually by pushing the button on the left twice (you have to wait for it to zero out to 00.000 before pushing it the second time - if it is at 00.003 when you go to push it the second time, it will just tare again to 00.000). The scale also seems to give its readings rather quickly - so no problems there.
IN SUMMARY: The EatSmart Scale has three battery-conscious features: generous three-minute automatic shut-off, option to turn off manually, and ability to tare without actually spending time taring! It also uses standard AAA batteries which are easily replaceable. It offers four convenient unit modes: 0000 grams, 000.00 ounces, 00.000 pounds, and 00.000 kilograms. Overall a simple and functional scale without any bugs. I'm completely satisfied with my purchase - I would buy it again!

We stopped in at a major toy retailer and happened upon this - I had been checking out kitchens and this was on my wishlist, and with a $10 coupon in my pocket I decided to spring for it on the spot. It is set up in our kitchen for our 19 month old who doesn't let me do a thing by myself in the kitchen. I'm hoping that I can get her playing with the kitchen while I cook. It is the perfect size and fits in decor wise with our existing kitchen, so it makes it really cute that way. It has open and close features and a phone with sounds, all already a hit with her. She's really into open and close, so she is a bit disappointed that the spice bottles that come with the set don't open (not an issue for me). We've been showing her how to shake the spices into the pot and now she's shaking them all over the house! The only improvement I would make is I wish there was a shelf in the fridge compartment. You can really only put one thing in there without one. I like the rack in the oven and we use that for storage of the pots. For now, the extras that come with the set (cutlery, plates, spoons, some food and spices) are good for us and we don't need the extra food items until she's really into experimenting and playing more often with the kitchen. It is big enough for two to play, and at 19 months she can reach the stuff on the back shelf, but she'll fit this for a while. One recommendation for set up - on the burner that makes sounds, we've had this for less than 24 hours and already had to take the burner out twice because the batteries come loose, so before you screw it together, just get some masking tape to keep those bad boys secure and you'll be all set. The screws for the burner are a bit tough to get in and out, so it is a pain that there isn't a cover to keep the batteries secure. Other than that, we're happy with our purchase and foresee lots of fun (and hopefully mom can resume cooking in her kitchen, too!).

Our two year old loves this kitchen. Though there are others with more bells and whistles, she likes the "bubbling" pans and "working" phone. The accessories are very cute. The neutral colors are preferable to us as they are unisex and makes the kitchen look more realistic (and doesn't look ridiculous in our house). Though it is the perfect height for her now it may be a little short for a 4 or 5 year old. I think the assembly would be impossible for one person to do alone. My very strong husband had to hold it together as I put the screws in. I think without him it would not have gone together properly. Make sure you follow directions. Not a steal but not too bad a price either; I would buy it again.
